TMJ TREATMENT
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD) is a term that refers to pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint, surrounding muscles and associated nerves. This complex joint connects the jaw and skull.
The jaw is unique in that it has two joints (one on each side) that move together in coordination. When this symmetry is disrupted, it can lead to a variety of symptoms. Other contributing factors could include stress, dental work, disordered breathing and trauma.
Common symptoms include:
Painful clicking, popping, or grinding
Jaw locking and Tongue tension
Grinding (bruxism) or clenching
Difficulty/pain with chewing, yawning or speaking
Facial pain, Sinus issues and Headaches
Ringing in the ears and Dizziness
About TMJ
Treatments
TMJD treatment focuses on relieving tension, restoring balance and improving function in the jaw and surrounding structures. Your first appointment will begin with a comprehensive health history review, followed by an assessment of your symptoms and the range of motion in your jaw and neck. This allows us to create a personalized treatment plan that targets your specific goals.
Treatment may include:
Assessment of the jaw and its function
Intraoral manual techniques (with gloves), targeting different muscles
External massage techniques on the outside of the jaw, head, neck and upper back
Education on at-home exercises and habits to reduce strain
